the operational state of a piece of computer hardware or software. For ex-ample,
if a Windows user thought she was about to experience a hard disk
malfunction, (in many cases the computer would actually tell the user that hard
disk failure was eminent) she would open Windows in the safety mode and be
sure to backup all important files before having a technician examine the ma-chine.
